Samaná Smiles: Bringing Hope and Life-Saving Care to Children in the Dominican Republic

Freedom Missions is honored to partner with Samaná Smiles Foundation, an organization serving children and families throughout the Samaná Peninsula of the Dominican Republic with critical medical care, practical support, and hope.

For families living with limited resources, a medical diagnosis can quickly become overwhelming. A child may need medication the family cannot afford. A specialist may be hours away. A test, surgery, or ongoing treatment may cost far beyond what a parent could ever manage on their own.

That is where Samaná Smiles Foundation steps in.

Founded in 2014, Samaná Smiles serves young people throughout the greater Samaná Peninsula who are facing urgent and sometimes life-threatening medical conditions. The organization brings together healthcare providers, sponsors, volunteers, community relationships, and financial resources to help children receive care that might otherwise remain completely out of reach.

As Samaná Smiles case manager Aurea Svelti explains:

Some people just don’t know where to go, what to do, or who to ask.

Samaná Smiles helps answer those questions.

Finding the Children Who Need Help

One of the remarkable things about Samaná Smiles is that the organization does not simply wait for families to find them.

Cases often come through teachers, neighbors, community members, WhatsApp groups, social media, doctors, and families who have already received help.

Aurea is continually connected to communities across the peninsula, watching for situations where a child may be going without needed care.

Sometimes a parent is not even asking for financial assistance.

Aurea recalls seeing a mother in a community group whose five-month-old baby had fallen from a bed. The emergency room had ordered a test the mother could not afford. Instead of asking for a handout, the mother offered to sell products from her small business so she could raise the remaining money.

Aurea contacted her privately.

I told her, ‘You don’t have to do this. We can help you. Please come with your daughter and the prescription.’

That simple intervention meant the mother did not have to choose between what she could afford and what her baby medically needed.

And that is often how Samaná Smiles works: someone notices, someone connects, and the organization begins building a path toward care.

More Than Paying a Medical Bill

The work goes much deeper than simply handing a family money.

Over the years, Samaná Smiles has developed relationships with pharmacies, doctors, clinics, hospitals, and other medical providers. When a child needs medication, the foundation can work directly with the pharmacy. When a consultation, test, procedure, blood supply, or surgery is necessary, the team works to connect directly with the medical provider whenever possible.

Payments can then be made directly to the provider, creating accountability while removing another burden from families already facing a medical crisis.

Transportation, food, or lodging can also become part of the equation when a family must travel for treatment.

Doctors have also joined the effort. Some donate their professional services entirely, while others reduce their fees or work with clinics to lower the overall cost of treatment.

The result is not simply financial assistance.

It is a network.

When Early Help Changes a Child’s Future

For Samaná Smiles, timing matters.

Some children come to the organization after families have spent months or even years trying to navigate medical problems by themselves. Parents may not know what type of specialist their child needs, where to find one, or how to begin getting a diagnosis.

Aurea has seen firsthand why reaching families earlier can make such a difference.

We want people to know about us so when they find out there was an accident, a syndrome, something—they come to us right away.

Early testing, medical treatment, therapy, or medication can sometimes prevent a condition from progressing into something far more serious.

In other circumstances, Samaná Smiles helps families finally understand what is happening with their child so they can begin making informed decisions about the future.

That kind of guidance is itself a form of care.

Standing With Children Through the Hardest Cases

Some of the children Samaná Smiles serves require extraordinary levels of medical support.

One of those children is Edward, a young boy living with Neurofibromatosis Type 1, or NF1, a rare genetic condition that can cause tumors to grow along nerves.

His treatment has required specialized and extremely costly medication. Yet the treatment is making a difference. Aurea described seeing the progression stop and tumors begin to shrink, creating the possibility for further medical intervention.

Edward's story is one of the cases Samaná Smiles continues to share publicly as the organization raises support for his care.

Another young patient, Willisvech, has also required sustained medical treatment. After her father had already exhausted much of the family's resources while trying to save her mother from cancer, he found himself facing another devastating medical crisis when his daughter became sick.

Samaná Smiles helped the family access treatment, including locating medication internationally when it could be obtained at a substantially lower cost. Their current updates report that Willisvech is doing better after months of treatment.

These stories reveal something important about the work.

Samaná Smiles does not only help with emergencies that can be solved in a day.

They stay.

They help families navigate months of appointments, prescriptions, treatments, changing medical needs, and uncertainty.

A Community Built Around Hope

Behind every medical case is a child.

There is also usually a mother, father, grandparent, sibling, teacher, neighbor, doctor, volunteer, donor, or community member who refuses to give up on that child.

Samaná Smiles brings those people together.

The organization was created because local leaders saw families trying desperately to raise money one door at a time when a child needed medical care. The goal became to create a sustainable structure so families would no longer have to face those situations alone.

That vision continues today.

Through relationships across the Dominican Republic and beyond, Samaná Smiles is creating pathways to healthcare for children who might otherwise have very few options.

And sometimes those pathways lead to something priceless: another treatment, another year, another opportunity to go to school, spend time with friends, dream about the future, and simply be a child.

Freedom Missions + Samaná Smiles

Freedom Missions is grateful to call Samaná Smiles Foundation one of our partners.

We believe lasting impact happens through relationships with organizations and leaders who are already deeply connected to their communities, understand the needs in front of them, and are committed to serving people with integrity and compassion.

We have been privileged to hear the stories coming from Samaná, to stand alongside the work, and to see what can happen when the right resources reach the right people at the right moment.

And our partnership is continuing.

There are more children to reach, more families who need someone to help them navigate the road ahead, and more opportunities to strengthen healthcare access throughout the Samaná Province.

Freedom Missions looks forward to continuing to partner with Samaná Smiles as they bring medical care, practical support, and hope to children and families throughout the Dominican Republic.
